When we hear
the word “theology” our minds first turn on to the meaning of the word rather
than to rationalize it, the generalist or the common people define the word
“theology” means “the study about God”, the theological seminary student search
for the Hebrew and Greek word to define the term “theology”, historians look
for the history to define the word “theology” and the contextualized gives its
meaning of ‘theology” as in the context, the culturalist understands “theology” based on the culture.
The word “theology” has been explained in thousands of books by many
different authors and understanding. But let us expound the word “theology” as
a core of our life that we live every day. Theology is everything, all the
ideas that had been defined I’m not saying it is wrong, all are really good and
helpful for our understanding about God, but let me go further a bit, when we
study theology we begin our theology with God why? Why not begin with Sin,
salvation or the other things…?. But God wants us to understand theology in a
very simple way, which the scriptures tell us about theology in creating man
and woman as a sexual being in God’s image (Gen:1:26-27). God created MAN, male
and female with the pleasure of sex, and the sexuality that God has created is
the plan of God to save the whole world that God needed to be born as a man to
redeem human being from sin. That is why the Apostle Paul writes in his letters
to the Ephesians, the unique union and
communion between husband and wife is representative of the mystery of the
union between Christ and the Church (Eph:5:22-32). Theology and sex play
together in the Christian life. Sex is not a weird subject to relate with
theology. Theology has so much to say about sex, sex and theology goes hands in
hands, theology define the way of life and principles of acting, but sex unites
(husband and wife) the acting plan of God to save the world. The theology called
the act of sexes or the uniting of sexes (male and female) as “one flesh” no
more two (Gen: 2:24). Sex education need to emphasize that sex and theology is
connected to each other. In this way I would love to say that when we study
theology we need to view sex as one of the main subject to be included in our
understanding about God and His redemptive plan in Christ Jesus. Here are some
of the dimensions of sex education that we need to understand on how theology
and sex is connected each other.
(a)
God ordained sex:
Sexual intercourse between male and
female is often said to be doing what come naturally. In one sense it is
correct. The act of mating requires only two bodies, two sexes, two sets of
genitals. It can be a passionate moment, a merely chance of encounter or the
fulfillment of the biological urge. But God made sexual relationship as
something totally different. As I have said above that theology and sex are
connected we cannot separate them from each other. Sex was ordained by God. He
designed it for our bodies to give and receive pleasure with each other. He
ordained it in His mind before creating the world as a greatest gift for human
being to enjoy with the purpose of saving human kind (Gen:3:14-15; 1Tim:2:15).
(b) God
separated sex:
The word separated in Hebrew is “qadosh” and in Greek “hagious” which is means separated,
holy, totally different from the other or set apart. God made sex holy and
pronounce it good after He created man and woman as a sexual being. God
intentionally made or set apart sex for the two individual human beings to give
pleasure and enjoy within the bond of marriage. God separated sex and He hates
sexual sin, or any kind of distort of what He had created and called as holy
(Gen: 1:25-31) which God himself pronounce GOOD, twice in this chapter after He
creates especially in verse thirty one (v-31) God put more weight after He
created MAN (male and female) consider very Good than after creating the others
things before Human in verse twenty-five (v-25) when the word GOOD appeared it
means GOOD in everything when is GOOD in everything then automatically in God’s
eyes it mean HOLY.
(c) God united
sex:
God
called the united act of the two sexual human being male and female as “one
flesh” which the Bible tells us from the first marriage in the Garden of Eden.
So the two are no longer two but one. God sees sex as one of the intimate time
that a husband and wife could find themselves in creating a perfect
understanding of their humanness and relationship, and He also means this
uniting business to glorify and honor Him alone. God purposefully made sex as
heterosexual to humankind, so that they could honor Him when every time that a
husband and wife have sex, and thank God for this wonderful gift to them by
being uniting two as one, male and female in the married life.
(d) Sex is God’s
plan:
I would
say that before time God had already conceived sex from eternity, He wisely
planned sex for human being and purposefully made it perfect. He made sex for
both animals and human being, but he made human sexuality special and higher
than the animals or the other creatures. He provides principles, guidelines,
boundaries, morality ethically and socially and the most of all God didn't work
out on Adam and Eve though He stuck His plan for man and a woman, and their
sexual relationship, despite the fall, but still God even used human marriage
or human sexuality the proper sex as the vehicle for redeeming the fallen
humanity from the power of sin centuries before our Savior Lord Jesus came who was born from a virgin woman name Mary
with Miraculously made it happened for Mary to conceived Him for us without
human effort or natural sexual intercourse but through the power of Holy Spirit
and he was born as human conceived approximately nine months in the womb of
Mary then exist on earth like us in the same way as we all came to exist here
on earth through our God’s specific chosen Parents for us to be born but HIM only a virgin Mary is needed to be
born not a sexual intercourse to intervene but God alone using Mary genital to
give birth for HIM who is our Lord God and Savior. So Sex is God Planned and
theologically sex is connected to God but sex is not God.
